Sometimes you want a snack, but not a full meal. You just need something to satisfy a craving, or to tide you over until dinner, or to quiet a noisy stomach late at night. Maybe you’re looking for a good appetizer to serve to guests, or some finger foods to offer up as hors d'oeuvres at your next party.

Whatever the case, you want a bite sized snack that delivers big flavor in a small package. It should come as no surprise that us here at the Jones household are especially fond of pepper jelly when it comes to snack time. In the past, we’ve sung the praises of pepper jelly as a snack dip for chips and crackers. However, that barely scratches the surface of the many ways a crafty home cook can incorporate pepper jelly into their culinary creations.

Whether you’re looking for something to feed your family between meals, bring to the office potluck, serve at your next neighborhood get-together, or just to enjoy by yourself after a long day, here are three bite sized snack ideas that go great with a jar (or two, or three, or…) of Grandma Jones’ Pepper Jelly!

Arancini Balls

Never heard of arancini? That’s okay; they’re easy to make and even easier to love. This Italian specialty consists of cooked risotto, left to cool, then shaped into balls stuffed with fresh mozzarella. The balls are then rolled in breadcrumbs and fried. Serve these Sicilian spheres with a side of pepper jelly for dipping (or if you want to get really creative, use pepper jelly as a filling), and you’ll soon be saying “Mama mia, that’s a tasty rice ball!”

Calamari Rings

Breaded calamari rings served with a side of pepper jelly dip

Another Italian favorite, fried calamari rings are a popular appetizer at restaurants of all kinds, but you can make them right at home. It’s actually much easier to prepare than most people realize. All you need is some fresh or thawed calamari rings. Soak them in milk for up to three hours (to tenderize), then dip them into egg before shaking them inside a plastic bag filled with seasoned breadcrumbs. Fry them in oil (or with an air fryer) until crispy, then pair with a small bowl of sweet and spicy pepper jelly. Mmm, good.

Deviled Eggs

A big personal favorite around the Jones household, deviled eggs are great for holidays, luncheons, or even just a lazy weekend. Simply hard-boil some eggs, then carefully remove the shells. After that, cut each egg in half and scoop out the yolks. Mix the yolk in a small bowl, along with mayonnaise, mustard, and your choice of seasonings. Spoon the resulting mixture back into the hollow egg halves and, last but not least, add a dollop of pepper jelly to each one. For an extra dimension of flavor, we like to serve them with a small piece of bacon on top.
